Auburn Dominates Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl

Scores 63 Points, Most in Music City Bowl History

Franklin, Tenn. (Dec. 28, 2018) – In recent years, the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl has earned a reputation of coming down to the final play of the game before the winner is decided. In this year’s edition of Nashville’s Holiday Tradition, there was little question as to the outcome from the opening drive. Ultimately, the Auburn Tigers manhandled the Purdue Boilermakers 63-14 in front of a crowd of nearly 60,000 fans.

The scoring onslaught began on the third play from scrimmage when Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham connected with JaTarvious Whitlow for a 66-yard touchdown reception. On Auburn’s next two drives, Whitlow again found the end zone, giving him three touchdowns in the first quarter. The dominance continued in the second quarter, though this time it was junior wide receiver Darious Slayton with three touchdown receptions. Touchdowns from Anthony Schwartz and Big Kat Bryant capped Auburn’s impressive first half. With a 56-7 lead at halftime, Auburn had already eclipsed the previous Bowl record of 49 points scored set by West Virginia in 2000.

Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn pulled many of his starters shortly into the third quarter as the game was essentially decided at that point. Though Stidham played just over two quarters, his 373 passing yards and five touchdowns were enough to earn the game’s Most Valuable Player honors. In addition to setting a new Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl record for most points scored, Auburn set a new SEC record for most points scored in any bowl game.

“You never know what you’ll see in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl. We’ve had nail-biting finishes, and now we’ve seen one of the most dominant performances in NCAA history,” said Scott Tansil, Executive Vice President at Franklin American Mortgage Company. “We’re honored to be the title sponsor of this great game, and we couldn’t be happier with the spotlight it shines on our company and our hometown of Nashville.”
