The Dec. 30 contest posted a 3.1 US HH rating on ESPN

Franklin, Tenn. (January, 2017) – The Tennessee Volunteers (9-4) defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-4) by a score of 38-24 to win the 19th annual Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. The game was a sell-out, setting a new Bowl attendance record of 68,496 fans.

Tennessee’s senior quarterback Josh Dobbs set a record of his own, eclipsing the previous Bowl record of two rushing touchdowns scored by a single player by running for three on the night – a performance that earned him the game’s MVP honors. In addition to his rushing touchdowns, Dobbs connected with wide receiver Josh Malone for a touchdown in the middle of the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Tennessee. Senior defensive end and Brentwood Academy alum Derek Barnett also had an impressive game, setting an all-time Tennessee record with the 33rd sack of his career.

Second-string Nebraska quarterback Ryker Fyfe kept the Cornhuskers in contention with a pair of touchdown passes to wide receiver Brandon Reilly, and a fourth quarter fumble recovery and subsequent Fyfe rushing touchdown allowed Nebraska to pull within seven points. Ultimately, that was as close as the Cornhuskers would come before Tennessee pulled away to capture its first Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl championship in its second appearance.
