Wholesale mortgage production climbed 3.7% in the third quarter, grossing a total of $110.81 billion.

Retail lending took the biggest hit of the three production channels in the third quarter, according to an Inside Mortgage Trends analysis of survey data from a diverse group of lenders. Retail production across three major loan products was down 5.7% from the second quarter. The channel still represented 53.6% of the $609.18 billion originated by the group, but that was down from 55.6% in the second quarter. Wholesale-broker production posted the biggest gain, climbing 3.7% to a combined $110.81 billion of conventional-conforming, government-insured and jumbo lending. That bumped the wholesale channel up to an 18.2% share for all three products. In the conventional-conforming market, broker production rose 1.6% in the third quarter, while both retail and correspondent volume fell. Wholesale lending posted a hefty 46.4% increase in the jumbo market, though it still accounted for just 9.2% of that segment.
